Elite 8 picks

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 27th, 2010

The sweet 16 was very sweet as we went 5-1. Let’s turn these winnings into a big stack with our pick of the tournament.

Kentucky -4
vs West Virginia Loss

Kentucky has arguably played the toughest defense in the tournament so far along with Duke. This will be their first game against a team that can match their size and strength inside. However, West Virginia’s guards cannot keep up with the quickness of Wall and Bledsoe. Not many can, but West Virginia is definitely slow of foot at the guard without Truck Bryant. The way to beat Kentucky is to make them shoot perimeter shots, but I see this game being full of West Virginia turnovers leading the Wildcat dunks. Bet the farm on this one! Hopefully you can lock it in at 4 like I did as I expect this line to go to 6 or 7 by tip off.

Tennessee -2 vs Michigan St Loss

No Tennessee team has made it this far, but this unit is playing well together. They’ve beaten the best teams in the country this year so they fear nobody. This is where missing Kalin Lucas will hurt the Spartans. I don’t think this game will be close. Ohio St is a much better team than Michigan St and Tennessee knocked them off. Vols win by 8.

Baylor +4.5 vs Duke Loss

Duke hasn’t been to a final 4 in a few decades and there’s a reason. They’re soft. They were my lock on Friday, but you can’t have loyalties if you want to win. As good as Duke’s guards are, Baylor still has the second best back court left in the tournament (K St is number 1). Dunn and Carter are too quick for Scheyer and Smith. Baylor also has a much better front court with Udoh and Acey. Duke doesn’t get enough inside scoring. If Duke wins, it will be a last possession game. They struggled against an undermanned Purdue team. Baylor is hot and has the semi-home court advantage. Ride the Bears to another win against your man!

The one game I’m not picking is Kansas St vs Butler. Kansas St is definitely a final 4 caliber team, but Butler is the hot team. This game is too close to call for me so I’m just going to sit back and enjoy the show. If I had to pick someone, I’d take Kansas St, but I’m staying away from this.

NCAA Sweet 16 (Fri games)

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 26th, 2010

What great games last night! Not only were they fun to watch, but the were profitable as well. Let’s hope tonight’s games are just as exciting.

Duke -8.5 vs Purdue Winna

Duke is playing so well, yet flying under the radar. They have 3 great scorers which is tough for any team to match up with. Purdue has gutted their way to 2 victories without their star player, but their run ends tonight. Purdue has trouble scoring without Hummel and Duke can score in so many ways. This one could get ugly.

Michigan St -1 vs Northern Iowa Winna

Northern Iowa is the sexy pick after their huge win vs Kansas and Kalin Lucas being injured for the Spartans. However, I like Izzo’s experience and preparation along with the big front line of the Spartans. They have final 4 experience from last year and although Lucas being out will hurt them in the long run, they should be fine without him tonight.

Baylor -4.5 vs St Mary’s Winna….prime rib dinna

The Gaels put on a show last weekend, but it’s a new weekend. One thing they have going for them is that Baylor has never been here either. However, I loved Baylor from the start of the tournament and I love them tonight as well. They have the big bodies to bang with Samhan and their guards are too quick for St Mary’s. Samhan is a head case and when he struggles early, he could be more of a distraction than an asset to the team. The only chance St Mary’s has is to get hot against the zone. Guards win in the tournament as shown by all 4 results last night. I’ll take Dunn and Carter over McConnell and Allen.

Record: 3-0
Tournament record: 11-5-1 (69%)

NCAA Sweet 16 (thurs games)

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 25th, 2010

Hope you have a sweet tooth because here are some sweet plays for tonight.

Butler +6.5 vs Syracuse W

Butler has the shooters and the experience to bust the zone. Syracuse has extreme length which will bother most shooters, but Butler has guys with range that will make Syracuse extend the zone well beyond the 3 point line causing a bigger gap in the middle of the zone for Hayward and Howard to do damage. I wouldn’t be surprised if Butler wins outright, but then again I wouldn’t bet on it either. Take the points and be happy with that.

Washington/West Virginia over 141
L

The Huskies are on a roll and are one of the fastest teams in the tournament. They will push the pace all 40 minutes. West Virginia has athletes and scorers to match them. Washingtons defense offers little resistance, so expect a shoot out.

Kansas St -4.5
vs Xavier W

Xavier is an impressive team, but they lack the well rounded balance of Kansas St. Crawford needs to have another huge game for the X-men just for them to have a chance. Even if he has a big game, either Pullen or Clemente can match him shot for shot and the supporting cast of the Wildcats is much better. This may be close early, but I like the Wildcats to win by double digits.

NCAA Round 2 (cont.)

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 21st, 2010

Another profitable day for us. Hope you’re on the bandwagon. Here are our plays for Sunday in round 2.

California +6 vs Duke big loser

California finally got healthy at the end of the year and are playing like the top 10 team they were predicted to be. This will be an interesting match-up of two teams who rely on their starters so much and just 3 people do 80% of the scoring for each. Until you play against Jerome Randle, you don’t realize his great range. As soon as he steps over half court, he’s in shooting range. This should be an exciting and fun game to watch and i feel it will be decided by a last second shot. That’s why I’m taking the points.

Maryland -1 vs Michigan St Last second loser

Sparty let us down in round 1 and now they face a much tough opponent. Greivius Vazquez will be the best player on the court and that’s a big reason why we like the Terps to take this one.

Xavier pk
vs Pittsburgh Winna

The X-men were quite impressive in their win against the Gophers despite shooting only 20% in the first half. Jordan Crawford had the best individual performance at the Bradley Center in day one and I am riding his momentum in this game. I’m sure Xavier will have the support of the crowd in Milwaukee as well. Pittsburgh is offensively challenged and the NCAA tournament is all about teams that can score.

Record: 1-2
Tournament record: 6-4-1

NCAA tournament round 2

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 20th, 2010

Round one was a success as we limited our plays and won most of them. I don’t have the lines for Sunday yet, so here are my 3 best plays for Saturday.

It was a pretty good first round, but it ended on a sour note with Michigan St’s poor 2nd half.

Tennessee -8.5
vs Ohio Winner

Ohio has been surviving because of hot 3 point shooting. Tennessee is one of the tops in defending the 3 allowing only 29%. The Cinderella ride stops here as the clock strikes midnight. Tennessee is too athletic and too good defensively for this to be close.

Wake Forest +9 vs Kentucky Big Loser

My formulas like this one so I’m going with it. Ismael Smith has the quickness to stick with John Wall and Bledsoe. Aminu is hot. They have Chas MacFarland who can bang with Cousins and limit his dominance. The young Kentucky team has not been tournament tested with an easy first round victory while Wake had to scratch and claw to beat Texas.

Kansas St -4.5
vs BYU Winner

Jimmer Fredette is becoming this years Steph Currie. Not many people in the country had heard about him, but he’s the real deal. However, Kansas St is too well rounded and they have the best back court in the country. After this NCAA tournament, Jacob Pullen will become a house hold name. This could be a fun shootout to watch, but in the end, Kansas St is too big and too talented for the mormans.

Record 2-1
Tournament record: 5-2-1

NCAA round 1 top 5

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 18th, 2010

I always like a ton of games, but I’ve narrowed it down to my top 5 for round 1.

favorite play: Wake Forest +4.5 vs Texas (Thursday) Winna!

Texas has lost their top 2 point guards to season ending injuries and have struggled ever since. Good guard play wins in the NCAA’s and Wake has a big advantage here. Wake also has an NBA first round talent in Amini who will give Texas’s front line fits. Wake will win outright.

Michigan St -13 vs New Mexico St (Friday) Big Loser =(

All Izzo does in the tournament is win. I believe he is unbeaten in NCAA round 1 games. New Mexico St plays no defense so I expect Michigan St to score at least 90. I don’t see the Spartans allowing more than 75 to anyone, especially NMSt, so I like the Spartans to cover this big line.

Marquette/Washington over 143
(Thursday) Winna!

Both teams love to run and push the pace. Neither are great defensively, but both teams can shoot and put up a lot of points. It will be a fun game to watch and as much as I like Marquette in this one, the safer play is to take the over.

Texas A&M -3 vs Utah St (Friday) Winna!

In a battle of Aggies vs Aggies, I feel the big school is going to push around the little school. Utah St has an impressive record, but they haven’t beaten anyone. Texas A&M is a talented team who finished the season strong. They won easily against Texas and OK St (both in the tournament) and had close losses on the road against Baylor and Kansas. Donald Sloan (A&M) has plenty of tournament experience and is a great scorer. A&M will win by double digits

San Diego St +3 vs Tennessee (Thursday) Push

I’m surprised this line is as low as it is since the public seems to love Tennessee to make a run in the tournament. San Diego St is a balanced and athletic team whose strength (rebounding) is one of Tennessee’s weaknesses. Bruce Pearl’s teams are always undisciplined and he’s not a good x’s and o’s coach. Steve Fischer has won in the NCAA’s before and his team won’t be intimidated by the spotlight. I expected SDSU to win outright.

Record:3-1-1

Last day of free NCAA picks

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 14th, 2010

A split decision yesterday as the underdogs prevailed once again. Looks like we’ll end up with a profitable season, but not profitable enough for our liking.

Totals for 2/27/10 thru 3/14/10: 28-21-1 +4.9 units
Season: 89-80-5 +1.0 units

Richmond +4 vs Temple

It’s been a weekend for the dogs, and the Spiders will fill that role once again today. Both teams are very solid and will be in the tournament regardless. It will be a low scoring affair which will most likely be decided by the last possession.

Georgia Tech +8.5 vs Duke

Pre-Season, Georgia Tech was picked by many to contend for the ACC title. They’ve been very inconsistent thanks to Lawal getting into foul trouble and young players like Rice and Favors being inconsistent. They are finally clicking on all cylinders and to me, they are of equal talent to Duke. This line is way to high thus this is my favorite play of the day.

Kentucky -7 vs Mississippi St

With four games today, you’d think at least one favorite has to win and cover. My pick is the Wildcats. They have yet to be tested in the tournament and Cousins will not be intimidated by Vernado. Vernado has a tendency to get into foul trouble and he’ll have his hands full today. Nobody has the quickness to stay with Wall and Bledsoe and when you can’t stop penetration, it’s hard to stop anyone. This one could get ugly early.

NCAA Tournament picks 3/13/10

Posted in NCAA Basketball, Uncategorized on March 13th, 2010

Yesterday we made back what we lost Thursday and then some. I don’t have time to type up my analysis in these games. You’ll just have to trust me.

Totals for 2/27/10 thru 3/12/10: 25-18-1 +5.2 units
Season: 86-77-5 +1.3 units

UTEP -7 vs Houston L

Illinois +8 vs Ohio St W

Vanderbilt -2 vs Mississippi St L

Akron -1 vs Ohio L

San Diego St +5
vs UNLV W

New Mexico St +9.5 vs Utah St W

Record 3-3

NCAA tournament picks 3/12/10

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 12th, 2010

What a rough day yesterday. Not a good day for favorites.

Totals for 2/27/10 thru 3/12/10: 20-17-1 +1.3 units
Season: 81-76-5 -2.6 units

Virginia +17 vs Duke (11 am) W

Virginia has been playing well and their slow style of play should easily keep this game around a 10 point margin. There haven’t been many blowouts in the tournament games so far, so taking the points is usually a good bet.

Illinois +8.5 vs Wisconsin (1:20 pm in Indianapolis) W

The teams each won on the others home court. Illinois has a lot more on the line than Wisconsin and I feel Wisconsin is only slightly better than Illinois largely in part to coaching. I think this will be a close game decided in the last few minutes, so take the points.

Tennessee -1 vs Mississippi (2 pm) W

Succinctly…the Vols are the better team and they have a game under their belt to get used to the arena settings.

Dayton/Xavier over 134 (5:30 pm) W

Based soley on the previous two meetings this year, which both went over 150 points.

Massachusetts +9.5 vs Richmond (8 pm) W

UMass is playing well with two upset wins to end the season. Richmond doens’t need to win to make the field of 64, so take the points.

Akron -4.5 vs Western Michigan (6 pm) L

Class of the MAC against a first round surprise. This is an awfully low line, but I’m still taking it.

Record: 5-1

NCAA Premier Picks 3/11/10

Posted in NCAA Basketball on March 11th, 2010

Today officially begins the March Madness in my mind. All the big conferences are starting their tournaments so there’s good games all day long. Sit back, enjoy the games, and make good investments.

Totals for 2/27/10 thru 3/12/10: 19-13-1 +4.7 units
Season: 80-72-5 +0.8 units

Syracuse -4.5 vs Georgetown (11 am) L

Strong System play

Wake Forest -4 vs Miami-Fl (1:20 pm) L

Wake has been playing well and is the more talented team with more at stake. Miami is undisciplined and lacks true scorers.

Michigan -7.5 vs Iowa (1:30 pm) L

Michigan has struggled with Beilein’s staple 1-3-1 defense, but they still have a lot of offensive talent. Iowa has very little talent. Expect a blowout early and an easy win for the Wolverines.

Tennessee -12 vs LSU (2:20 pm) L

The Vols have been rolling now that they are past the ugly off court incident from earlier this season. LSU has been poor all season long and I don’t expect much of an effort out of them.

Georgia Tech -3.5 vs North Carolina (6 pm) W

Tech has handled the Tarheels in both of their contests and this one should be the same result. You need good guards to win in college and UNC definitely lacks guard play.
