- The two queens of racing are putting in their final preparations for their 2010 debuts on Saturday, and if all goes well Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta will meet on April 9 at Oaklawn Park in the Apple Blossom Invitational.
First things first.
Rachel Alexandra had an easy gallop over the Fair Grounds main track on Wednesday as trainer Steve Asmussen tightens the screws for her first start since... - Rains are expected to hit SoCal yet again this weekend. That’s a bummer because the Grade I Frank E. Kilroe Mile over the turf is usually one of the best races to bet for horseplayers during the entire Santa Anita meet.
In any case, it’s our duty as horseplayers to put forth a solid effort and actually try to make some mullah off of Santa Anita’s Saturday card. - The Grade III Sham Stakes was supposed to be run two Saturday’s ago but torrential rains caused a wipe-out. So, 3 year olds with designs on April’s Santa Anita Derby will take to the track this Saturday to go 1 1/8 th miles in the Sham.
Named after the bridesmaid to the brilliant Secretariat in both the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, the Sham has started to become one of the... - Santa Anita will continue with their lucky sunshine only policy this week on Thursday. That’s good news for horseplayers who should be able to find an overlay or two or three in Race 7 on Santa Anita’s Thursday card.
The race, an optional claiming $80,000 at 1 1/16th miles over the Pro-Ride surface, will showcase some up and coming fillies in Southern California. - Santa Anita resumes its week of racing on Wednesday with a full 8 race card.
The Pick 3 that I’m gong to play on Wednesday starts in Horse Race 6 and ends in Race 8. I’ll be trying to beat the favorite in all three legs of the Pick 3. - If you like betting on the lades, Gulfstream Park should be your destination on Saturday, with the Fasig-Tipton Filly Festival featuring three excellent graded stakes on the ten race card.
The stakes action kicks off in the seventh race, the $100,000 Sabin Stakes (G3) for fillies and mares going a mile on the main track. - All three of Gulfstream Park’s graded races on Saturday are restricted to female horses. The Grade III Sabin at a mile will showcase Justwhistledixie who hasn’t won since March of 2009 but figures to go off the favorite on Saturday.
The other two races, the Davona Dale and the Very One, could be won by long shots. - It’s the dead of winter in New York, and often a Wednesday card run over the inner track can lead some horseplayers (myself included) to doze off for a quick nap.
That won’t be the case today.
The nine race card on tap this afternoon is chock full of live longshots and vulnerable favorites, which should lead to some handsome payoffs, and we would like to be on board.
The play of the... - There are four graded stakes horse races on Gulfstream Park’s Saturday card. Three of those four graded stakes races make up my Pick 3 of the Day.

Analysis: Radiohead goes to the barn... - We had a hard time finding live longshots the last couple of days at Aqueduct, but that will not be a problem on Friday. There are plenty of bombs that could land along with several vulnerable favorites.
The Late Pick 3 for this afternoon includes three runners at 8/1 or better on the morning line, along with my top pick in the nightcap, who is sitting at a generous 6/1.
